The burden on the logistics industry continues to increase due to the increase in home delivery demand due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection and the expansion of the use of e-commerce sites. Such logistics are supported by many people who are in charge of warehouses and delivery.
Now that business is tight, not only efficiency but also safety will be improved, and the logistics industry will be more stable, which will lead to a stronger social infrastructure.
This time, we will focus on the fork list among AI for improving safety, and introduce “Safe Cargo Handling AI Fork Buddy” that can quantitatively evaluate dangerous operations.

“Safe Cargo Handling AI Fork Buddy” capable of quantitative evaluation of dangerous operations
“Safe Cargo Handling AI Fork Buddy” is an AI specializing in forklift safety management that started trial recruitment on November 16, 2021.
Accidents involving forklifts and other accidents occur frequently throughout the country, but many of them can be prevented if the risk patterns are quantitatively understood. In many warehouses, it is not uncommon for forklift operations to be vaguely dangerous based on intuition and experience.
In today’s busy business world, you can efficiently understand dangerous forklift operations by recording dangerous patterns and evaluating them quantitatively, instead of relying on intuition and experience.
By simply attaching a drive recorder to a forklift, the “Safe Cargo Handling AI Fork Buddy” detects from the recorded video the basic movements of the forklift to dangerous operations, evaluates them quantitatively, and creates highlight videos of dangerous operations. I can do it.
Why was “Safe Cargo Handling AI Fork Buddy” Born | Numerous Issues Surrounding Forklifts
“Safe Cargo Handling AI Fork Buddy” is an AI jointly developed by Fujitsu Cloud Technologies and Suntory Logistics. After the press release of the joint project, we received many requests for a service, and it was born after interviewing many companies in the logistics industry.
As a result of our interviews, we learned that many companies in the logistics industry cannot afford to invest in the safety of forklift operations due to their busy schedules.
There are four main issues surrounding forklift operations:
|Work efficiency is a priority, and due to busyness, it is not possible to spend sufficient time on safety measures in the first place.Evaluation using sensor values does not provide sufficient accuracy / Since there is no image, it is not possible to understand the cause of the movement detected by the sensorI installed a drive recorder but I don’t have time to check it / I want to streamline the checking workEvaluators want to provide not only qualitative and personal feedback, but also quantitative feedback.|
Especially for the third point, even if a drive recorder is introduced, it is too busy to take the time to check the recorded video for a long time. It has become a premise that By using AI, instead of checking after an accident occurs, it becomes possible to quantitatively evaluate safety after checking all recorded videos.
While each company has its own safety standards for forklift operations, the enforcement standards for them were personal. Companies that don’t invest enough in safety have little opportunity to look back on their forklift operations after obtaining a license. It is not easy for each company to formulate its own safety standards, and there are many problems such as how to decide the evaluation items, what to do with the standards of each judge, and who will do the evaluation in the first place.
Rather than each company improving the safety of forklifts on its own, we will develop services that utilize AI to improve the safety of forklifts throughout the industry and create a unified safety standard. ” was born.
The name “Fork Buddy” contains the message that forklift drivers and evaluators work together safely as buddies.
To make the future logistics industry safer and more secure
We asked Mr. Miyazaki, who is in charge of business development, why Fujitsu Cloud Technologies is developing Fork Buddies.
Since we are not specialized in a specific industry, we didn’t know much about the logistics industry. Therefore, we interviewed more than 20 customers about their industry issues and showed them their worksites. In the summer, I completed a forklift driving skill course.
Without fear of misunderstanding, driving a forklift is not difficult, and I felt that I could operate it to some extent after two days of riding, and that I could naturally master it after riding it for work for a month. But at the same time, I was terrified that small multi-ton vehicles would drive at high speeds with workers nearby, and sometimes without safety checks.
“Driving as usual”, “Driving like everyone else”, “No accidents so far”, so is it safe enough? I think everyone in the field knows well that this is not the case. However, there are situations where countermeasures cannot be taken. And we have the technology that could break this
It is the responsibility of those with technology to help those in need. It is a mission that must be fulfilled responsibly. On the other hand, no matter how far you go, the people on the ground know the best about the site. We share wisdom with our customers and develop this service to create a world where people involved in logistics and their families can live safely.
Improving the safety awareness and skills of forklift drivers may seem like a trivial improvement in the short term. However, from a long-term perspective, it will lead to the prevention of occupational accidents and property damage accidents. In particular, forklift accidents often occur not immediately after obtaining a license, but when the operator becomes accustomed to operation.
Each person has different habits when operating a forklift. That’s why, by providing feedback tailored to each individual, improving the safety awareness and skills of forklift drivers may seem like a trivial improvement in the short term. However, from a long-term perspective, it will lead to the prevention of occupational accidents and property damage accidents.
A forklift accident not only loses the trust of shippers, but also poses a threat to the lives of employees. is also connected.
